Trout angling plagued by gales and rain

11 September 2007

So far the hoped for Indian summer has not appeared and gales and rain have dominated our fishing as they have for most of the `summer'. Consequently lochs are brim full and trout are hugging the margins busily feeding up for what looks like a bumper early winter spawning. Watten has gone decidedly off, St Johns also, however Loch Calder and Shallag are still producing good baskets. Boat fishing has been impossible on many days in early September because of the dangerous winds and sadly I have to report that a visiting angler drowned in Loch Watten when his boat capsized. With only 3 weeks to go before the season finishes it looks very much as if only the productive late lochs will fish well. Most salmon anglers are happy however with all the local rivers doing well and the River Forss having its best catches for many years.
