Magnificent Mayfly14 June 2007
After a long much anticipated wait the Caithness mayfly have now burst into life and the Reay lochs have been producing some of their best trout in years. Lesley and guest angler Peter McKenzie had an amazing day with around a dozen fish caught on green drake mayfly imitations size 10. All the trout were above average weight and beautifully conditioned with the best weighing in at 2lb plus. All fish were returned bar the voluntary brace each. Simply stunning would be the best way of describing the action. Day tickets for these waters are avialable through Lesley or Harpers fly fishing, Thurso. Elsewhere the mayfly have been appearing on St Johns and the hill lochs of Strath Halladale notably Shallag which has been fishing well in all conditions from bright sun to cold and damp. Watten has been fishing well with a few 2lbers coming off, rumours of a very large trout from Heilan possibly double figures are also circulating. All in all it looks like Caithness is the place to be right now!
